ABOUT THE ART +

Flat-Wear’s magnetic notepad features the art from a trading card by Church & Dwight, an American baking soda company, as part of its “New Series of Dogs” collection issued in 1910 in the U.S. and Canada. Number 12 in a series of 30 designs, the “Black Wavy Retriever” is by painter Gustav Muss-Arnolt (1858-1927). The description on the back of the tiny card, printed in tiny type, reads, “A dog built upon the lines of the setter but somewhat larger, with perhaps an infusion of Newfoundland blood. He is used to stay to heel until the game is killed when he is ordered to fetch.”

Muss-Arnolt’s art often depicted sporting and gun dogs, as well as other breeds, waterfowl, and horses. According to the American Kennel Club, his “faithful renderings of expression, anatomy, and coat texture make his work useful for the study of breed development.”
