Thoroughly unique and uniquely ours, this decor pillow is the funkiest item in our contemporary collection. One-of-a-kind artwork is reproduced onto cotton twill with your choice of complementary fabric on the back: black with gray dots or black and white gingham.

The Flat-Coated Retriever on this pillow looks like it is wet from a long walk in the rain or a good swim—but it can take up residence on your sofa, bed, or favorite chair without getting it soaked, and it won’t shed, either! An invisible zipper makes the outer cover removable for cleaning; the pillow insert is a plush, high-quality down alternative that we think is just as nice as the real thing.

ABOUT THE ART +

(Flat-Wear founder/designer, Jennifer):
The original artwork used for this pillow is a monotype. A monotype is a print created by applying pigment to a smooth surface (in this case, oil-based ink to a plexiglass plate), then transferring the image to paper via an etching press. Due to the nature of the process, the artist never quite knows how the one-of-a-kind print will look until they pull the paper off the plate.

Intrigued by my good friend Laurie’s experiences with monotypes in printmaking class, I signed up to give it a try myself. Toward the end of my first evening, I used a palette knife to spontaneously paint a Flat-Coat over residual ink left on the plate from an earlier print. The resulting texture reminds me of two favorite photos: one of my first Flat-Coat, Vixen, heading toward the camera with a retrieved toy in her mouth, her coat wet from a hose-soaking on a hot summer day; and one of my second Flat-Coat, Olive, as a puppy taken after she did somersaults in the wet grass.
